Coronavirus India live updates: 06:30 IST on Thursday 04 June (03:00 CEST), there have been 216,821 cases confirmed6,088 people have died and 104,071 people have recovered from the virus.

According to the latest figures published by Johns Hopkins University, 6,393,956 cases have been detected worldwide, with 384,463 deaths and 2,789,573 people now recovered.

Indian government facilitated return of 850,000 people to Bengal

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday said the state has facilitated the return of 8.5 lakh people at a cost of Rs 40 crore. Earlier in the day, she appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to provide Rs 10,000 to every migrant worker who has been displaced by the lockdown

“I appeal to Central Govt to transfer Rs 10,000 each as one-time assistance to migrant labourers, including people in unorganised sector. A portion of PM-CARES could be used for this,” Banerjee tweeted.

Cyclone Nisarga approaches

Cyclone Nisarga reached India’s west coast on Wednesday, killing two people in the western state of Maharashtra. Government officials asked people residing near the sea coast to leave the house and move to shelters in the nearby areas.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has advised fishermen not to venture out to sea along the coast of Maharashtra as a precaution.

Second biggest single-day rise in deaths from Covid-19

India suffered its second biggest single-day rise of Covid-19 deaths on Wednesday with 254 fatalities due to the virus. The grim figures have only been superseded once – the 270 deaths registered on 29 May.

The majority of the fatalities were recorded in Maharashtra (122 deaths – 48% of the total). In all, 8,723 patients tested positive for Covid-19 as India marked a sixth consecutive day with over 200 deaths, taking the total past the 6,000 mark.
